Herniated Disc

HERNIATED DISC

One of the most common neurosurgical conditions is the herniated disc, and is the most common cause of back pain to the leg.

The intervertebral discs are located between the vertebrae and their function is to cushion. As we age, these discs lose elasticity and its ability to withstand pressure. The discs are composed of a viscous core and a fibrous ring that protects the core.

When annulus degeneration occurs, the viscous core moves, coming out of the intervertebral space. Associated with this situation, pain occurs because the herniated disc compresses nervicios elements that pass through the spinal canal, compressing the nerve root or compressing the spinal cord.

Herniated discs are found most often in the lumbar spine, usually at L4-L5 and even more at L5-S1. And hernias typically occur in the lateral area, as in the back there is a ligament (the posterior common vertebral ligament) that is strong and prevents subsequent herniation.

Causes of a Herniated Disc

Among the most common causes of a herniated disc include:

+Sudden movements as extension or flexion of the spine

+The exertion, for heavy lifting

+Continuous excessive load on the back.
